| Dear Friends:
Thank you for your wonderful response to the May update. ABOUT REFUGEES Bob Striler meets most refugees arriving in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He sees what is almost an overwhelming need every day. Although the refugee agencies provide some of the basics, much more is needed. Having furnishings and household items available make Bob's day! The greatest gift we give arriving refugees is hope. When they arrive, they are often fearful, depressed and overwhelmed by all they've lost and their sense of helplessness. Careful not to take the reins from their hands, which creates an unhealthy dependence, we show them we care by being present in their needs. Among our gift-givers are dentists who contribute invaluable time and services. This gift of caring is especially healing. It not only relieves physical pain but often dramatically improves a person's appearance. TWO WIDOWS In 1988, we received a tip regarding a woman who appeared to be in great need. Priscilla Guerin had dropped out of life. "When Bob Striler came to my door, it was the first time I had laughed in five years," she would tell us later. Glenn Wamble, Clayton Whalley and many others became her family and a local church became her community. Priscilla bid us farewell last month as she succumbed to a prolonged illness. What a joy she was in our lives! |
Reba Grimmett was not equipped in the late eighties to deal with the loneliness and financial stress caused by her husband's fight with cancer. A Parkland Hospital social worker first alerted us to their immediate needs for food and companionship. Then, following her husband's death, the Clintons, Sloans, Bob Striler and many others continued to care for Reba as they would their own mothers.
Many times I looked at the portrait that hung in Reba's living room - the beautiful young girl beside her handsome husband - and recognized only a trace of that young woman in the Reba we knew. Life's hardships had stolen much of her youth. Our hearts were saddened recently when we learned that Reba's life with us had ended. These two widows often told us that they had only heard of God before we came but now they know Him. Our lives have not only been blessed having known them but also encouraged by the miracle of their transformation. Every person's gift whether it be the gift of friendship, time, transportation or something material goes together to make us a community - a community of light among men. Thank you. Immediate needs: Flatware, dishes & furniture. We are in great need of people to help Bob pick-up and deliver items. (Because of recent health problems, Bob must cut back on his activity.) Kosovo container: food, blankets, first-aid items, medical supplies, children's clothes, diapers & formula. |
