The acute shortage of medical supplies and equipment in war-torn Kosovo
have reached critical proportions and efforts to help that country's hospitals
meet basic health care needs are now underway in North Texas.
According to Dallas-based Love In Action Int'l executive director, Rae
England, "thousands of hospital patients are faced with the additional
hardship of leaving Kosovo in order to receive treatment. To some, leaving
the country is a viable alternative but to most, it is completely unrealistic."
England recently returned from Kosovo where she attempted to assess the
needs. "After visiting hospitals in Pristine and Pia, I was almost overwhelmed
by the enormity of the need for simple, very basic medical supplies within
these facilities," England said.
Love In Action Int'l is a group of Dallas area people who are committed
to meeting needs of others wherever they find them. The non-profit organization
is now collecting dental and medical supplies and equipment to ship to
hospitals and other health care institutions in Kosovo.
"Our goal is to send three 40-foot ocean-going containers full of everything
from bandages to ultra-sound equipment," said England. "In order to significantly
impact such a negative situation, we will need help from a lot of generous
people," she continued.
While in Kosovo, England laid the groundwork for Love In Action Int'l
designees in that country to receive and distribute the shipments. In
addition, arrangements are currently being made by England's group for
about twenty Kosovo patients to leave the country for more immediate care.
